Shirley J. Cox

Mrs. Shirley J. Cox, 77, of Clay City, Illinois, passed away at 6:12 p.m., Saturday, May 2, 2015, at her home.   Shirley was born on September 1, 1937, in Flora, Illinois to Chlorus & Leona (Watson) Dennis.  She attended Foster Grade School in rural Clay County and then attended Flora High School.  

On December 15, 1955, Shirley married the love of her life, Johnnie W. Cox, in Salem, Illinois.  In her spare time, Shirley loved doing word finds, completing thousands of them over the course of her life.   She and Johnnie enjoyed spending time together while listening to their gospel and country music shows, as well as, getting their exercise together while on one of their many walks.   Shirley spent much of her time cooking for her family, and she loved baking pies.  Above all, Shirley’s most beloved thing was her family, always, the dedicated and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. 

Mrs. Cox is survived by her husband Johnnie Cox of Clay City, IL; 1 daughter: Rhonda Sullens of Clay City, IL;  3 grandchildren: Tori Sullens of Clay City, IL, Kia Baker of Xenia, IL, and D.J. Baker and wife Misty of Clay City, IL;  1 great-grandchild: Takisha Baker; 1 sister: Linda Wiegel and husband Richard of Clay City, IL, and 1 brother: Ralph Dennis and wife Marie of Flora, IL.   Shirley was preceded in death by her parents. 

Services for Mrs. Cox will be at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at Kohn Funeral Home in Flora, IL, with interment to immediately follow at Clay City Cemetery in Clay City, IL.   A public visitation will be held on May 5, 2015, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.   Expressions of sympathy should take the form of donations to the Hospice of Southeastern Illinois and may be received at the funeral home.  Online condolences may be expressed at www.kohnfuneralhome.com.
